IT Asset Management at Scale: Lessons from 20+ Enterprise Deployments Across Asia Pacific

After placing over 200 ITAM professionals across APAC in the past three years, we have observed consistent patterns in what separates successful programmes from those that stall.

IT Asset Management programmes fail more often than they succeed. In our work placing ITAM specialists across 20+ enterprise deployments in Asia Pacific, we have seen the same failure patterns emerge regardless of organisation size, sector, or toolset.

The most common cause of ITAM programme failure is not technical — it is governance. Organisations invest in ServiceNow, Snow Software, or Flexera, implement discovery, and then watch their CMDB degrade over 18 months because no one owns data quality as a ongoing responsibility. The technology works. The governance model does not.

The second most common failure is hiring for tool knowledge rather than process maturity. A candidate who can configure CMDB classes and business rules is valuable. A candidate who can also establish a CI lifecycle governance committee, define a data quality KPI framework, and communicate CMDB value to a CIO is exceptional. These are different skills, and both are required.

The deployments we have seen succeed share three characteristics: executive sponsorship with defined accountability, a dedicated ITAM team with both technical and process skills, and a governance model that treats CMDB accuracy as a business metric rather than an IT metric.

If you are planning an ITAM programme or looking to strengthen an existing one, we are happy to share what we have learned. The patterns are consistent enough that we can usually identify the gaps within a single conversation.
